In Defense of Liberty: Steyn's foreword to Wilders' book

- Artwork by Bosch Fawstein
NRO: "The Spirit of Geert Wilders - A foreword to Wilders’ Marked for Death", by Mark Steyn

When I was asked to write a foreword to Geert Wilders’ new book, my first reaction, to be honest, was to pass. Mr. Wilders lives under 24/7 armed guard because significant numbers of motivated people wish to kill him, and it seemed to me, as someone who’s attracted more than enough homicidal attention over the years, that sharing space in these pages was likely to lead to an uptick in my own death threats. Who needs it? Why not just plead too crowded a schedule and suggest the author try elsewhere? I would imagine Geert Wilders gets quite a lot of this. And then I took a stroll in the woods, and felt vaguely ashamed at the ease with which I was willing to hand a small victory to his enemies. Islam=Apartheid: the security hazard

Homeland Security Newswire: "Canadians outraged: Veiled Muslim women not required to lift veil, prove ID at airports"

Canadian airport security personnel do not ask veiled Muslims women to lift their veils, show and ID, and prove their identity; the veiled women do not even interact with security personnel: rather, a man traveling with the women typically hands in all the passports and is the only one to communicate with airline staff while the veiled women simply walk through, unchecked and unidentified; a video showing two veiled women walking unchecked through security at Montreal's Trudeau International Airport causes outrage in Canada (...) >>>

Creaping sharia in action -

Atlas Shrugs: "NON-MUSLIMS ARRESTED FOR ATTENDING AN ARAB {MUSLIM} FESTIVAL IN DEARBORN"

Last year, Nabeel, David and friends went to the Arab festival and filmed a video which went viral (see below). I first posted the video here, back in 2009. Well this year, these good, decent Americans were arrested -- based on what? Based on sharia (Islamic) law. The video was shocking because it exposed the lack of freedoms for non-Muslims in America (Dearborn) when Islam was involved. Muslims are given special rights, treated as a special class that gets special treatment.

This year, Acts 17 Apologetics (Nabeel's group) was banned from passing out flyers at the Muslim festival. David Wood wrote me:
Yes, we're banned from handing out literature, but we didn't do that. We followed the rules, and still got thrown in jail. They flat out lied about us. We can prove they lied with the video footage (just like last year), but the police took our cameras and won't let us have the footage. There's major oppression of anyone who criticizes Islam.
This is against basic American rule of law. America was based on individual rights -- no special rights for special classes. All matters of human rights fly right out the window and sharia (Islamic) law seamlessly takes over when Islamic supremacism rears its ugly, aggressive head. (...) >>>

Is the veil dropping for Iranians? -

Tehran Times: "The Ultimate Unveiling of Iranian Women", by Farzaneh Milani - Hat Tip: Tom Carew

Have you considered the gender makeup of the two opposing camps in Iran today? On one side, is an all-male cabal of gun-totting, club-wielding men — the Army, the Revolutionary Guard and the volunteer militia — supported by the pantheon of the highest government offices in the land — the Supreme Leadership, the Presidency, and membership in the Guardian Council — all monopolized by men.

- Caption: Newsha Tawakolian -

Like the Taliban in Afghanistan, the military junta in Sudan, the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) in Algeria, the ruling elite in Saudi Arabia, this faction advocates a strict separation of men and women. They want the physical space and with it the social order separated based on gender. They want to segregate mosques, schools, universities, beaches, and buses. During his term as the mayor of Tehran, President Ahmadinejad proceeded to institute separate elevators for men and women in municipal offices.

On the other side, is a sea of lawfully demonstrating men and women marching side by side and shoulder to shoulder. Holding hands, green in color, hopeful in outlook, vibrant and non-violent, they fight bullets and batons with open hands and support Mir Hossein Moussavi, who is often accompanied by his wife, Zahra Rahnavard. The Amboy Times: "Dutch Theater segregates gender to appease Muslims"

You've come a long way baby, now go back. Imagine going to the movies and not being able to sit next to your spouse. (emphasis not mine.) On Friday night, a Muslim stand-up comedian was scheduled to give a show in a Rotterdam theatre with segregated seating for the men and women in his audience. Moroccan-born writer and TV producer Salaheddine Benchikhi was to make his debut as a stand-up comedian at Theater Zuidplein in Rotterdam. At his request, the theatre said it would offer female audience members the option of sitting apart from the men, as Algemeen Dagblad reported several hours before the show on Friday.

According to the newspaper, 50 of the 590 seats had been reserved for women who object to sitting beside a man due to their Islamic faith. As an extra 'service', the orthodox ladies may sit in the first rows of the balcony. "Whether the option will actually be utilised remains to be seen", Joyce van Dongen of Theater Zuidplein stated. "Fifty is an estimate made by Salaheddine's management. (...) >>>

EurSoc: "Sharia Courts "Legally Binding" In UK"

Well, Rowan Williams will be pleased, as will those prominent legal minds who said it was vital and inevitable that Sharia Law be introduced to Britain. It is reported today that Islamic Sharia courts are exploiting a loophole in British law and pronouncing judgments on cases including divorce, financial disputes and even domestic violence. (...) The government has tolerated Sharia law for various civil law cases, but the move into criminal and family law seems to confirm warnings about "two-tiered" and "alternative" justice systems developing in Britain. Already, the courts are handing down judgements which clearly defy common British values on equal rights. The Mail reports:

"In one recent inheritance dispute in Nuneaton, a Muslim man's estate was spit was between three daughters and two sons with each son receiving twice as much as each daughter - in keeping with sharia law." A mainstream court would have demanded equal treatment. More worrying is the movement of Sharia into criminal law. (...) What next - and where will they stop? Britain has an alternative legal system developing under the noses of the authorities. Indeed, the police seem to be colluding with the courts, dropping investigations into violent incidents on the Sharia courts' say-so.

Indeed, it's possible that Muslim police officers are acting in the interests of their fellow worshippers. (...) Similarly, two Christian preachers were booted out of a Muslim neighbourhood in Birmingham. The officer, who was very aggressive, told the preachers, "We were in a Muslim area and were not allowed to spread our Christian message. He said we were committing a hate crime by telling the youths to leave Islam and said that he was going to take us to the police station." (...) Wonder if Dr Williams and his supporters still believe Sharia is essential for Britain? (...) >>>

Legal Jihad: a new waive of universal jurisdiction on the way

Hudson: "Anti-Israel "Lawfare" in Europe", by Soeren Kern

Pro-Palestinian activists are launching a new round of anti-Israel lawsuits in European courts. The lawsuits, which exploit the legal principle of universal jurisdiction, are being used to harass current and former Israeli political and military leaders, with the twin aims of tying Israel's hands against Palestinian terror and delegitimizing the Jewish state.

Although so far none of the lawsuits filed against Israel in European courts has reached the stage of a trial in which Israeli leaders have appeared before a foreign judge, even short of actual prosecutions, pro-Palestinian activists have scored huge propaganda victories by charging Israeli officials with war crimes. This alone makes the pursuit of frivolous universal jurisdiction lawsuits a winning proposition for many activist groups.

On June 23, two Belgian lawyers, representing Palestinians, filed suit in Belgium against 14 Israeli officials on charges of war crimes allegedly committed during the Gaza War, a three-week armed conflict that took place in the Gaza Strip during the winter of 2008–2009. Those charged include Israeli opposition leader Tzipi Livni for her role as foreign minister during the war, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai, and other Israeli military and intelligence officials. Boring within, at the Dept. of Justice -

WSJ: "Gitmo's Indefensible Lawyers", by Debra Burlingame and Thomas Joscelyn

Legal counsel to some of the detainees went far beyond vigorous representation of their clients. Doesn't the public have a right to know?

(...) The attorney general has the right to select whomever he chooses to work in his department, and to set policy as he sees fit. He does not, however, have the right to do it in the dark. The policies he advances must face the scrutiny of the American people, his No. 1 client. The public has a right to know, for instance, that one of Mr. Holder's early political hires in the department's national security division was Jennifer Daskal, a former attorney for Human Rights Watch. Her work there centered on efforts to close Guantanamo Bay, shut down military commissions—which she calls "kangaroo courts"—and set detainees who cannot be tried in civilian courts free. She has written that freeing dangerous terrorists is an "assumption of risk" that we must take in order to cleanse the nation of Guantanamo's moral stain.

This suggests that Ms. Daskal, who serves on the Justice Department's Detainee Policy Task Force, is entirely in sync with Mr. Holder and a White House whose chief counterterrorism official (John Brennan) considers a 20% detainee recidivism rate "not that bad." It is entirely legitimate to ask who else among Mr. Holder's hires from the Gitmo bar is shaping or influencing national security policy decisions. Meanwhile, the public can decide whether the lawyers at Paul, Weiss who are volunteering at Guantanamo are an example of the legal profession's noblest traditions. We spoke to Ms. Mason's executive assistant on Friday seeking her comments. Multiple calls and emails had not been returned as this paper went to press last night. (...) >>>

Gordon Brown: "universal jurisdiction abused" - With former Foreign Minister Zipi Livni being unable to travel to Britain for fear of arrest on the basis of pomo law - so-called "universal jurisdiction", a legal concept that allows judges to issue warrants for anyone accused of committing war crimes anywhere in the world - PM Gordon Brown seems to have woken up to the fact this kind of hampers his foreign policy. Pro-Palestinian groups have abused the law to try to arrest former or retired Israeli officials, including Livni. Retired General Doron Almog narrowly dodged arrest at Heathrow airport in 2005 -

Telegraph: "Britain must protect foreign leaders from private arrest warrants", by Gordon Brown

In recent years the world has made huge progress in the way it acts against those suspected of war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity. Significantly, the United Nations has embraced our responsibility to intervene in countries where such atrocities are being committed. And the complement to this is the principle of universal jurisdiction, which allows for prosecution in any country of certain serious offences wherever and by whoever they were committed. (...) As we have seen, there is now significant danger of such a provision being exploited by politically-motivated organisations or individuals who set out only to grab headlines knowing their case has no realistic chance of a successful prosecution. (...)

There is a case now, therefore, for the evidential basis on which arrest warrants can be allowed to be tougher and for restricting the right to prosecute the narrow range of crimes falling under universal jurisdiction to the Crown Prosecution Service alone. (...) But by bringing the risk of arrest into closer alignment with the risk of prosecution, our system of universal jurisdiction can be stronger. For it would be clear that we only bring cases based on evidence of sufficient strength to convince the Director of Public Prosecutions that there is a credible case. With this approach, I am confident that an amendment on better enforcement of existing legislation will serve to enhance Britain's status in the eyes of international law, world opinion and history. (...) >>>

Middle East Forum: "Islamist Lawfare Defeated in Texas", by Daniel Huff

Libel suits are not normally associated with national security, but a case the Texas Supreme Court ruled on January 15 carries just such implications. The suit against internet journalist Joe Kaufman is a prime example of how libel law can be manipulated to stifle dissemination of information about terrorism and radical Islam. (...) This result is important for two reasons. (...) >>>

Times Online: "Hamas using English law to demand arrest of Israeli leaders for war crimes" - Hat Tip: Tom Carew

The Islamist group Hamas is masterminding efforts to have senior Israeli leaders arrested for alleged war crimes when they visit European countries including Britain, a top Hamas official involved in the effort has told The Times. The claim comes amid continuing diplomatic fallout after a British arrest warrant was issued last week against Tzipi Livni, who served as Foreign Minister during Israel’s Gaza offensive last winter. (...) President Peres described the incident as “one of the greatest political mistakes” that Britain could have made and calling for the law to be changed. “Everything is based on ... a hostile majority public opinion,” he said last week. “The British promised they would fix this and it is time that they do so.” Gordon Brown and David Miliband, the Foreign Secretary, have each expressed their concern and their opposition to the warrant. The transnational push for Islamophobicphobia ...

Dr Sanity: "IF YOU CAN'T SAY ANYTHING NICE ABOUT ISLAM...

Christopher Hitchens warns us not to say anything negative about Islam, particularly since the UN is considering a resolution that will criminalize your opinions: (...) U.N. Resolution 62/154, on "Combating defamation of religions," actually seeks to extend protection not to humans but to opinions and to ideas, granting only the latter immunity from being "offended." The preamble is jam-packed with hypocrisies that are hardly even laughable, as in this delicious paragraph, stating that the U.N. General Assembly (...) "Islamophobia" is not a phobia at all-- it is a completely rational fear of an insane and irrational force that seems to be sweeping the world.

Being afraid of the so-called "religion of peace" after the innumerable acts of violence, terror and depravity committed in the name of Allah worldwide is not exaggerated; not inexplicable; and most certainly not illogical. Being afraid of Islam as it undermines freedom of speech and thought, as well as and other critical values of Western civilization, is far from a phobia--it is a natural response to the sad reality. What the UN (and the Islamic world) would like to mandate is a sort of meta-Islamophobia--an Islamophobicphobia, to be precise; or, as I would define it, " an exaggerated, usually inexplicable and illogical fear of mere criticism of Islam, as well as a pathological reluctance to hold it to account for the actions and behavior of its followers."

Front Page: "Tears for a Terrorist" (includes video material)

Pity Omar Khadr. That is the theme of a disinformation campaign being waged by lawyers for the Toronto-born al-Qaeda terrorist, imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay since 2002, when he killed an American soldier with a hand grenade. Designed to win Khadr’s release and to publically discredit the U.S.-run detention facility in Cuba, this campaign received a propaganda boost this week when Khadr’s lawyers released a misleadingly edited eight-minute video, itself part of a seven-hour interview conducted with Khadr in 2003 by Canadian intelligence interrogators, depicting him as a sympathetic victim. The video is indeed pathetic. (...) Unmentioned by his public advocates is that Khadr hails from Canada’s “first family of terrorism.” (...) the anti-American and “legal Left” – are determined to see Khadr as a victim of American injustice. (...) “a teenager begging for help and (...) interrogation that violates U.S. law and any international law concerning the rights of children,” Dixon claimed. Actually, you see nothing of the sort. So far from brutalizing him, Khadr’s interrogator repeatedly tries to calm and reassure the detainee. (...) In this environment, to portray Khadr as a victim of military child abuse is to distort the facts beyond recognition. (...) >>>

Liberty Ditched for Sausages: boycott these cowards!

Last Friday we reported here that Jordan is seeking the extradition and prosecution of Dutch Freedom Party politician Geert Wilders on three counts:

- racism - incitement to hatred - insulting Muslims and Islam -

An Amman Court last Monday accepted the charges against Wilders on account of the short film "Fitna" pressed by a Jordanian group called "The Messenger of Allah Unites Us." "Fitna" outlines the dangers of radical Islam for democratic society. (Link to "Fitna")

Today we know which Dutch companies have 'distanced themselves' from Fitna. Politeia proposes a ban of its own against these companies which sell out democratic principles for sausages:
- Caption: "We WillNot Submit!" -
- Zwanenburg (Zwan sausages and luncheon meat)
- KLM (KLM-Air France-North West Airlines)
- Philips ("We make things better")
- Friesland Foods (dairy products:
- Friso (Nutricia, Olvarit, Nutrilon, Bambix dairy and baby foods)
- Milupa (Aptamil - we believe the latter two are all one and the same parent company Nutricia, now part of Danone)

The companies advertise their condemnation of Wilders' equation Islam=violence and distribute posters, stating that the film only serves to provoke.

President Zakaria Sheikh of "The Messenger of Allah Unites Us" is calling for the travel industry to ban KLM.

The publisher of weekly Fact International says the film has no relation with the freedom of expression. "Wilders has insulted all Muslims. He must be punished."

At the companies no one was available for comment, writes De Volkskrant. A KLM spokesman repeated an earlier statement that the airline is unrelated to political and religious movements and distances itself from this controversial film."

Post will be updated throughout.

Sign the Petition in Support of Geert Wilders

The present is a free translation of website Support Wilders! It is a transcript of the text, including how the petition can be signed.

"Geert Wilders, who is forced to conduct his work as an MP under bizarre circumstances, has been under assault for a long time by most political parties, interest groups and most disturbingly, by public broadcasters.

Death threats are on the order of the day. An Al Qaeda franchise recently declared a fatwa, a religious call for his assassination - the assassination of Geert Wilders and the assassination of the freedom of expression.

The Dutch government is silent and bargains with the interests of the Dutch people, and Dutch standards and values. In initiating this petition and the associated Internet site we want to lodge a fierce protest against the demonization of Geert Wilders.

Show your support for Geert Wilders and sign this petition. Make friends and acquaintances also aware. Support Wilders!
