A Lars Von Trier moment -

AVClub: "Lars Von Trier's "I am a Nazi" joke didn't go over so well at Cannes ", by Sean O'Neal

If it weren’t already obvious, director Lars Von Trier is a reliable source of juicy sound bites, often using interviews and press conferences to ramble bluntly, cheerfully, and usually quite wittily about his films and their stars without coming anywhere close to a filtered thought. It’s all in good fun—until, of course, someone brings up Hitler, which is what Von Trier did at today’s Cannes reception for Melancholia. Things were going relatively fine until then (...) >>>

London Evening Std: "John Galliano sacked by Christian Dior over 'I love Hitler' race insults"

John Galliano was today sacked by fashion house Christian Dior over an alleged racist and anti-Semitic attack. Dior said it had decided to fire him after seeing a video clip allegedly showing the designer making abusive comments in a Paris bar.

The video showed Galliano saying "I love Hitler", and suggesting two women he thought were Jewish "should be gassed". It followed allegations that he launched a racist attack in a Paris café calling a woman a "dirty Jew". (...) >>>

The Corporal as a Bollywood drama queen -

Haaretz: "'Dear friend Hitler'"

India's Bollywood film industry is making a movie about Adolf Hitler's last days, according to recent media reports. The movie, titled "Dear Friend Hitler", is due to be released at the end of the year and will look at Hitler's personality as well as his relationships with Eva Braun and other associates as the Third Reich collapsed. It is said to closely resemble the 2004 German film Downfall. “It will be a romance but not in the typical sense,” the film's director Rakesh Ranjan Kumar told the London Times. "We will try to show his fears, insecurities and pressures he faced while taking crucial decisions," Sharma said. According to Thaindian news, Indians are fascinated by Hitler, who chose the ancient Hindu symbol – the swastika - for his Nazi emblem. WSJ: "All the 'Nuance' That's Fit to Print - The New York Times relaxes taboos about Nazi Germany", by James Taranto

The other day David Leonhardt, who writes the "Economic Scene" column for the New York Times business section, offered an analogy that some are likely to find shocking (...)
What interests us here is not the merits of the argument but the fact that it is being aired at all on the pages of the nation's leading liberal newspaper. Not long ago it was considered in horribly poor taste to praise anything about the Nazi regime, or to liken contemporary liberalism to Nazism or other fascist movements of the past. (The left's hostility to Jonah Goldberg's book "Liberal Fascism" rested heavily on the latter element of the taboo.)

Leonhardt is aware of this erstwhile taboo: He opens his column by describing his analogy as "uncomfortable" and "a little distracting," and later he observes, somewhat cryptically, that "no sane person enjoys mixing nuance and Nazis." The weakening of this taboo is not necessarily an outrage. One ought to be able to discuss other aspects of Nazi Germany without being accused automatically of denying or diminishing the Holocaust and other Nazi evils--though of course there are, as well, people who do precisely that. (...) >>>

... excerpt on SignandSight, a translation from Neue Zürcher Zeitung ...

With the approach of Knut Hamsun's 150th birthday, the Norwegians are starting to shed some of their reservations about their great author and his regrettable Nazi sympathies, as Aldo Keel reports. Next year will finally see the inauguration of long-planned Hamsun Tower designed by the New York architect Steven Holl in Hamaroy, 200 km north of the Arctic circle, where Hamsun grew up as "a child of the poor". "The old ideological misgivings against Hamsun are starting to fade. This August, when a right-wing regional politician called for work on the tower to be stopped, saying it was waste of money in such a remote region, at the same time in Oslo, local left-wing politicians were fighting to have a square named in his honour. In line with the designs of the Social Democrat Helge Winsvold, the piazza near the opera which will be formed as soon as the new Munch Museum and other cultural buildings have been built, should carry Hamsun's name. 'There's no question that Hamsun was a scoundrel" the politician told the paper Aftenposten. "But we want his name because of his work.'" >>>

Facebook: "National Socialists Against Hitler"

National Socialism should be the enemy of 'Hitlerism' in the same way that Socialists might see themselves as enemies of 'Stalinism'. We think that for the reasons listed below Von Stauffenburg & other were right to try & blow him up!

Fact
The 1st National Socialist Party was established in Great Britain in 1916 - 4 years before Adolf Hitler formed the 'National Socilalist German Workers Party' and 3 years before Hitler was even ever heard of and had absolutely no anti-semetic doctrines whatsoever!

Pajamas Media: "The NY Times Hearts Nazi Architecture," by John Rosenthal
NY Times art critic Michael Kimmelmann is mourning the demise of an acknowledged specimen of Hitler's meglomaniac building style - Berlin's Tempelhof airport. (...) The description of Tempelhof as a “time capsule” is surely appropriate, though Kimmelman’s qualification of it as a “glorious” one should give serious cause to pause. For the time that has been captured in the stern, monumental contours of the edifice happens to be none other than the darkest period in Germany’s and Europe’s history: namely, that of the Third Reich. With its bunker-like solidity, imposing limestone facades, and grimly repetitive neo-classical forms, the object of Kimmelman’s affections - the “great cultural monument” and “civic symbol” - is in fact one of the most unmistakable specimens of Nazi architecture remaining in Berlin today.
The other two major examples are Werner March’s Olympic Stadium, which was built for the infamous 1936 Nazi Olympic Games, and the Reich Air Transport Ministry, which currently houses the German Ministry of Finance. The latter was designed by the same Nazi architect, Ernst Sagebiel, who would likewise design Tempelhof. Sagebiel, incidentally, was not only a Nazi architect in the sense of having been one of the major contributors - along with the likes of March and Hitler’s chief architectural advisor Albert Speer - to the development of the characteristically Nazi architectural style. He was also, of course, a Nazi party member and, for good measure, a member of the paramilitary SA as well.
But the primary source of Nazi architectural ideas was, of course, the “Führer,” Adolf Hitler, himself. (...) >>>

Signandsight: feuilletoning the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung of 20th May

In Italy neofascist historical revisionism is marching ahead. It is not Dirk Schümer's intent to tell a one-sided story but he gives some frightening examples. "The 'Alleanza nazionale' mayor of Trieste refused to take part in the Liberation Day celebrations, prefering instead to honour the victims of Tito's occupation of the city. In the same city the black shirts took off to the House of the Slovenian Minority and verbally abused the people there as non-European communists. In Mantua, descendants of a fascist ethnic cleanser attempted to establish a prize in his honour - in a grammar school named after a Jewish Shoah victim. And there are countless other minor taboo-breaking incidents, from Roman salutes and Duce worship in the football stadium to singing the 'Giovinezza' at official events." >>>

Prague Daily Monitor: "Court bans neo-Nazi march in Jewish Quarter"

A far-right organisation cannot march through Prague's Jewish Quarter 10 November, the anniversary of the Nazi Kristallnacht pogrom, because it did not meet legal conditions for preparing the event, the Supreme Administrative Court ruled yesterday. The Young National Democrats announced the march before it had legally registered itself, the court said. >>>
