The Flotilla Tactic: Turkey picking a war, GR, CY, IL pull together

DebkaFile: "Israeli-Greek defense pact invoked versus Turkish naval and air movements"

Israel and Greece have invoked the mutual defense pact they signed secretly only 12 days ago in the light of heavy Turkish sea and air movements in the eastern Mediterranean. DEBKAfile's sources report that this was decided in a long nocturnal phone conversation Wednesday night Sept. 14 between the Israeli and Greek prime ministers, Binyamin Netanyahu and George Papandreou, and at Israel's expanded cabinet of eight, which was called into session over the Turkish threat to its off-shore oil and gas rigs. The Turkish drums of war -

Haaretz: "Report: Turkey no longer averting attacks on Israeli targets"

Turkey has developed a new identification system for its U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets, which will now allow them to fire at Israeli targets, the Iranian state-run news agency Press TV quoted a Turkish newspaper as reporting on Tuesday.

According to the report, the new technology will allow Turkey to identify its enemies itself, as opposed to the old U.S. system which automatically identified all Israeli targets as a "friend," preventing Turkish fighter jets from firing at them, even if Turkish pilots were ordered to do so. The Turkish navy will significantly strengthen its presence in the eastern Mediterranean Sea as one of the steps the Turkish government has decided to take following the release of the UN Palmer report on the 2010 Gaza flotilla, Turkish officials told the Hurriyet Daily News. "The eastern Mediterranean will no longer be a place where Israeli naval forces can freely exercise their bullying practices against civilian vessels," a Turkish official was quoted as saying. Erdogan throws a Hitler @UN report -

In wake of UN report (courtesy @Metzada3833) on the (r)aid flotilla, oh my ... "Turkey expels Israeli ambassador over flotilla raid" -

American Thinker: "A good day for Israel at the UN, and that's news", by Leo Rennert

The UN on Thursday released its long-awaited report on last year's flotilla raid, focusing on the lead ship where Israeli commandos were savagely attacked by violence-bent Turkish nationals and, in self-defense, fired back, killing nine of them. The flotilla was bent on breaching Israel's blockade of Gaza. The conclusions of UN panel, headed by Geoffrey Palmer, a former prime minister of New Zealand, received general approval from Israel, while the Turkish government of Prime Minister Erdogan went ballistic in objecting to virtually every conclusion.

Specifically, the Palmer report concludes that Israel's blockade of Gaza is legal under international maritime law because Israel is under persistent attack from Gaza. Turkey strongly contested this point.
Regarding Erdogan's insistence on an Israeli apology, the report absolves Israel from taking any such step. It simply suggests that Israel issue a statement of "regret" and pay compensation to the families. Again, this is something Israel has long offered to do, but it's totally unacceptable to Erdogan. Greeks dash Audacity of Dope, Hamas does rest -

The Gaza Flotilla is in the process of disintegration! Atlas Shrugs has the goods"Hasna El Maroudi, 26, can be described as a “Dutch pro-Palestinian activist/journalist of Moroccan descent.” She had planned to join other activists aboard a Dutch ship to Gaza, until she learned that she would be going on a secret Hamas-organized mission and canceled her participation. This English translation of her account is meant to help her discoveries traverse the language barrier." -

CNN: "Greeks arrest captain of U.S. ship aiming to protest Gaza blockade"

Greek police have arrested the captain of a U.S. ship whose passengers and crew had hoped to help lead a Gaza-bound flotilla aimed at challenging Israel's maritime blockade of the Palestinian territory. (...) The reason given was that he had left the mainland without permission and put passengers in danger. He will appear before Greek prosecutors on Tuesday. Hirschmann added that, in addition to disobeying a police order, Klusmire is being charged with disturbing sea traffic.

"This is intimidation," she said. "They're making an example of our captain to stop other boats in the flotilla from trying to sail." (...) The Greek government said Friday that it won't allow any of the nine other boats in the flotilla to sail to Gaza because their mission is too dangerous. Flotilla members accuse the Greek government of buckling to pressure from Israel's government.

For their part, the Israelis have said they are mounting a diplomatic offensive to try to stop the flotilla from setting sail at all. (...) The Middle East Quartet -- composed of officials from the United States, United Nations, European Union and Russia -- on Saturday issued a joint statement asking "all governments concerned to use their influence to discourage additional flotillas, which risk the safety of their participants and carry the potential for escalation." The Hamas-tied Turkish group behind last year's deadly flotilla confrontation with Israeli commandos in the Mediterranean Sea announced Friday that it will not participate in an upcoming flotilla sailing to Gaza at the end of this month.

IHH's decision not to include the Mavi Marmara ship is based on "technical problems … It has nothing to do with the government or state," IHH head Bulent Yildirim said Friday at a press conference in Istanbul. Activists organizing the new convoy said earlier in the day at a news conference in Strasbourg that aboard the vessels will be European Union parliamentarians.

The organizers claimed the status of the lawmakers would "protect" the other activists aboard the vessels from IDF troops who might try to redirect or otherwise stop the ships from reaching Gaza. “In our view, the flotilla is clearly a political provocation... since there's no need for a flotilla to aid Gaza,” he said. “You can pass whatever you want to Gaza through normal channels.” (...) >>>

Israel putting UN on notice -

Meanwhile the Red Cross is asserting no humanitarian crisis is unfolding in Gaza -

Haaretz: "Israel: New Gaza flotilla has ties to Hamas, terrorist organizations"

Israel warned the United Nations Security Council on Thursday not to allow a new flotilla to sail to Gaza, saying that the flotilla organizers had "ties to Hamas and other terrorist organizations."

Another flotilla to Gaza is being planned for May, one year after Israel's deadly raid on the aid flotilla that sailed from Turkey. The new flotilla being planned is larger than the last one, with 15 ships that will transport over 1,000 people in an attempt to break Israel's naval blockade on the Strip.

While speaking to the UN on Thursday, Israel's UN Ambassador Meron Reuben said, "Numerous participants engaged in the planning of this flotilla have made very troubling statements expressing their willingness to become martyrs in this effort," Reuben said.

Flotilla organizers aim at "political provocation and not to advance any humanitarian goal," Reuben said.

He said Israel is determined to enforce the naval blockade of Gaza and "stop additional terrorists from infiltrating the area." (...) >>>

On February 12, 2011, the radical Islamist Turkish Internet portal Velfecr.com reported that Iranian President Ahmadinejad hosted, in Tehran, a Turkish Mavi Marmara delegation, comprising "Mavi Marmara mujahedeen, ghazis and families of the shahids," which arrived to celebrate the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution. The involvement of the uber-left, dangerous agitators and provocateurs like CODE PINK, Bill Ayers, even the AFL-CIO in the destruction of an America allied, no accident. In the way of background, Ayers was among the 1400 or so leftists from around the world who descended on Egypt a little more than a year ago with plans to march on Gaza. The Mubarak government quickly disabused the would-be marchers of their fondness for Muslim governments by denying all but 100 of the international activists their promised trip to Gaza. Still, the 1300 left behind, including Ayers and his weatherbride Bernardine Dohrn, made enough noise in Cairo to get everyone’s attention.

IsraeliGirl: "Flotilla Probe: Israel acted in accordance with international law in raid"

The inquiry committee appointed by Israel to investigate the events that occured on May 31st on the Mavi Marmara has released its report.

Headed by Honorable Supreme Court Justice Emeritus Jacob Turkel and and including jurists and world-renowned experts as well as international observers, the committee determined unequivocally that Israel acted in accordance to international law imposing and enforcing a blockade in international waters. The events that folded that day were a result of direct attack on IDF soldiers, an attack that took them by surprise.

This conclusion is based on testimonies of 27 witnesses in person and 12 witnesses in camera. The testimony was supported by a great deal of material that was submitted for the committee’s perusal. Among the witnesses there were also human rights organizations and two Israeli citizens who participated in the flotilla. (...)

Conduct of the passengers - there were 2 groups on the Mavi Marmara - peace activists, who boarded the ship in Antalya following a security inspection, and a “hard core” of 40 IHH activists who boarded in Istanbul without any security inspection and behaved as a separate group. They were joined by 60 other activists who participated in the violent events. When the ship’s captain ordered the passengers to return to their places below deck, the IHH activists remained on deck, put on life jackets and armed themselves with axes, chains, knives, hammers, etc.

The committee was convinced that the IHH activists used live weapons. Their intention was to breach the marine blockade and thereby provide Hamas with an advantage in its armed struggle against the State of Israel.

Handling of the passengers - After the takeover was completed, the stage of treating the wounded began. Eighteen doctors, six paramedics, and 70 combat medics and one senior physician were involved in this event. Some of the wounded resisted the administration of medical treatment but none died of their wounds after medical treatment commenced. The passangers were treated according to international law at all times.

Same Terrorist Group Behind First Mission Aims to Reach Gaza on the Second Anniversary of the Gaza War

In purported deliverance of needy Palestinians, four months ago, a Turkish "aid" flotilla of pro-Hamas supporters attempted to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza. Despite a weeks-long buildup and stern warnings from Israeli officials against the "humanitarian" efforts of a known terrorist group (IHH), the organizers and "Freedom Flotilla" crew continued their mission to Gaza -- leading to a lethal takeover by Israeli commandos and the death of nine Turkish "peace activists."

Some inconvenient facts about the Gaza-bound Turkish flotilla prove the entire incident was nothing more than a provocation by Islamic terrorists and their enablers. Leaving aside for the moment the Turkish government's decisive role in the clash and that the Turkish government-sponsored NGO behind the operation (IHH) is a terrorist group with direct links to genocidal terrorist organizations Hamas and al-Qaeda, the entire operation was never about delivering humanitarian supplies to Palestinians -- it was a PR war against Israel from jihadists seeking martyrdom in front of al-Jazeera cameras. RE: Gaza Tourism Guide

Dear Crazy People,

We’ve been given to understand that you intend to stage another media stunt, wherein you’re again going to float some empty ships – they may be full this time, they were mostly empty last time – in the general direction of the Gaza Strip. Your hope is apparently that your cameramen will capture the Israeli reaction and edit it into an overreaction or, failing that, simply reprint your feverish fantasies with slack-jawed credulity. Again.

Our problem isn’t so much that your goal involves obfuscating the millions of tons of food and aid we’ve delivered to Gaza civilians, which allowed Hamas to move money away from infrastructure and into weaponry, which led to more of our cities getting bombarded with rockets and missiles. It’s not even how, knowing that we deliver 15,000 tons of goods every week, your 10,000 tons of concrete isn’t exactly a shining testament to your good intentions. Not when just last week we handed over 810,209 liters of heavy duty diesel fuel, 21 truckloads of milk powder and baby food, 897 tons of cooking gas, 66 truckloads of fruits and vegetables, 51 truckloads of wheat, 27 truckloads of meat, chicken and fish products, 40 truckloads of dairy products, 117 truckloads of animal feed, 36 truckloads of hygiene products, 38 trucks of clothing, 22 trucks of sugar and 4 trucks of medicine and medical equipment. Really what we’re concerned about is that you suck at driving boats (...) >>>

Activists aboard the Libyan commissioned aid ship the Almathea are still intending on sailing directly to Gaza despite Israeli warnings not do so, said MK Ahmed Tibi (Ta'al) in an interview with Army Radio on Sunday. Tibi has been in contact with the organization sending the ship, the Gaddafi International Charity and Development Foundation. "The goal is to reach Gaza," said Tibi. "There is not only a humanitarian goal, but there is also a political message."

Tibi stated that the activists aboard the ship, expected to arrive in the area on Wednesday, "have no intention of physically confronting IDF soldiers." (...) Greek authorities said on Saturday night that the ship was headed for Egypt. (...) But Al-Jazeera, which has a reporter on the vessel, reported that its Cuban captain was indeed headed for Gaza. “Israel reserves the right under international law to prevent this ship from violating the existing naval blockade on the Gaza Strip,” Shalev told Ban Ki-moon. “The declared intentions of this mission are even more questionable and provocative, given the recent measures taken by Israel to ensure the increase of humanitarian aid flowing into the Gaza Strip,” Shalev wrote in her letter. Another blockade-busting ship with activists and aid on board could be bound for Gaza within a few days after Lebanese authorities granted permission Monday for it to sail first to the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. (...) "We have been granted permission to go to Cyprus and we are now in the process of making final preparations," said Yasser Kashlak, a Syrian of Palestinian origin who heads the group organizing the trip— the Free Palestine Movement.

Organizers said the ship plans to sail in the next few days, but did not give an exact date for departure because of security concerns. Lebanese Transport Minister Ghazi Aridi said the ship named "Julia" is now docked at the northern Lebanese port of Tripoli and can set sail once it is cleared by port authorities there. He said the ship would be allowed to sail to Cyprus and not directly to Gaza because Lebanon and Israel are technically in a state of war and Lebanon views Gaza as Israeli controlled. (...) >>>

JTA: "S.F. protesters prevent Israeli ship from unloading"

Hundreds of protesters gathered at the Port of Oakland to prevent an Israeli cargo ship from unloading. About 500 protesters gathered at the port at 5:30 a.m. on Sunday to meet the Zim shipping lines cargo ship. They convinced dockworkers to agree not to unload the ship when it arrived in the port. The ship did not arrive until 6 p.m. on Sunday.

A second shift of dockworkers, at the request of the demonstrators, agreed not to cross the picket line and did not arrive to unload the ship. The boycott of the cargo ship was set to last for 24 hours, an activist told the San Francisco Chronicle. The protest was launched in reaction to Israel's interception three weeks ago of a Gaza-bound flotilla (...) >>>

JP: "A floating symbol of failure"

Samar Alhaj, a Lebanese lawyer and female activist with ties to Hizbullah, proposes transforming women into “the new secret weapon” against Israel. That’s why, says Alhaj, the ship Mariam – named after the Virgin Mary – which is slated to set sail from Lebanon to challenge Israel’s naval blockade on Gaza, is making room for ladies only. (...)  United by their hatred for Israel, Sunni, Shi’ite and Christian women from Lebanon, the US, France, Britain, Japan, Kuwait and Egypt hope to present a particularly thorny challenge to Israel’s predominantly male naval force, who will have to contend with a boat full of “the gentler sex” on the open sea resolved to force their way into the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip. (...)

Though it has the trappings of a feminist endeavor, this new flotilla could not be farther removed from the egalitarian ideals of feminism. According to the Guardian, the organizers, which include Hizbullah, rejected a request by Haifa Wehbe, a Miss Lebanon runner- up and popular singer, to join. Wehbe’s “nudity, degradation and immodest dress” would “damage the reputations of all Arab and European women on board,” Hizbullah sources reportedly said. For those uninitiated into a culture of honor killings and face veils, it is not immediately clear how Wehbe’s participation could damage the reputations of her fellow sea-goers. But apparently, for Hizbullah, even Israelbashing takes a backseat to misogynistic religious extremism. (...) >>>

FEATURE -- the 'rosy' future of the (r)aid flotilla -

RealClearPolitics: "Israel is Endangered Today Like Never Before", by Caroline Glick

Israel is endangered today as it has never been before. The Turkish-Hamas flotilla two weeks ago precipitated a number of dangerous developments. Rather than attend to all of them, Israel's leadership is devoting itself almost exclusively to contending with the least dangerous among them while ignoring the emerging threats with the potential to lead us to great calamities. (...) Recent statements by the leaders of Iran, Turkey, Syria, Hamas and Hizbullah make clear that the members of the Iranian axis view the Mavi Marmara episode as a strategic victory in their ongoing campaign against Israel. The international stampede against Israel at the UN, the White House and throughout Europe exposed Israel's Achilles heel. The Mavi Marmara demonstrated that on the one hand the IDF cannot enforce its blockade of Gaza without the use of force. On the other hands it taught Israel's enemies that by forcing Israel to use force, Iran, Turkey and their allies incited a UN-EU-US lynch mob against Israel.

Iran, Turkey, Syria, Hamas and Hizbullah are moving rapidly to exploit their new discovery. In the very near future, Israel will face off against Iranian, Lebanese and Turkish ships complemented by ships full of Israel-hating German Jews and other Jewish and non-Jewish Hamas supporters. The Mavi Marmara showed Iran and its allies that they can win strategic victories against Israel by giving the IDF no option other than using force against them. This means that Israel can bank on the prospect that all the ships they are dispatching will be populated by suicide protesters. Indeed the Iranians have openly admitted this. Mohammad Ali Nouraee is one of the regime officials involved in dispatching the Iranian ships to the Gaza coast. In an interview this week with Iran's official IRNA news agency, Nouraee said that the passengers aboard the ships "are willing to become martyred in this way." (...)

First, it is a model that can be and in all likelihood will be replicated on air and land and it can be replicated anywhere. Israel can and should expect mobs of suicide protesters marching on Gaza to force Israel to surrender control over its borders. Israel can expect mobs of suicide protesters marching on Israeli embassies and other government installations around the world in an attempt to increase its diplomatic isolation. (...) >>>

Freedomist: "Showdown in Gaza- Iranian “Relief Ship” set to “tour” Israeli Border Saturday- Israel News- World", by Paul Collier

Showdown In Gaza On Saturday? Tomorrow, June 19th, could see a dangerous upping of the ante in he Pan-Islamic bid to initiate a general war against Israel as one of Iran’s top leaders is due to arrive on an Iranian “relief ship” to tour the Israeli border in Gaza. It’s not clear if the delegation of up to 200 Iranian officials plans to try to enter Gaza or to tour the border between Israel and Egypt.

However, what is clear is that Turkey and Iran have come to some sort of understanding as to their shared Pan-Islamic agenda and are attempting to create the false impression that Israel is doing something that would justify a general Pan-Islamic war against the Jewish state. Iran’s Larijani plans to reach Gaza. CNSN: "As Pro-Palestinian Flotilla Activists Gather in NYC, Jewish Group Urges State Dept. to Probe Links to Terrorism"

Tensions in the Middle East over the recent Gaza flotilla incident could surface in New York City on Thursday evening, when a pro-Palestinian group hosts flotilla activists at a public meeting Jewish activists have tried to thwart.

An organization called Al-Awda (The Palestine Right to Return Coalition) is holding a meeting in a Brooklyn church featuring a leading official in IHH, the controversial Turkish organization behind the attempt to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza. Pro-Palestinian, left-wing and anti-war organizations are co-sponsoring the event.

Also scheduled to speak are two people who were onboard the Mavi Marmara, the ship on which deadly clashes between Israeli commandos and pro-Palestinian activists left nine activists dead. The two are U.S.-based filmmaker Iara Lee and left-wing British activist Kevin Ovenden. (...) >>>

The Shark Tank: "Marco Rubio on the Gaza Flotilla- “There’s an International Effort to Marginalize Israel”"

Hundreds of Pro-Israeli supporters set up camp at Bayside Market Place in Miami to show solidarity with Israel, a besieged country that has been getting hammered in the global media of late. Israel has come under heavy criticism for authorizing IDF commandos to board a Gaza Strip bound flotilla of ships that were en route to Gaza on a ‘humanitarian’ mission. Subsequent videos of the incident clearly show that weapons were confiscated during the raid of the ship, after the “humanitarian” ship’s passengers attacked the Israeli commandos, leading to the deaths of several of the passengers. ME Forum: "Erdogan and the Israel Card", by Steven J. Rosen

The deaths of nine Turkish citizens in the Gaza flotilla incident would have brought a severe reaction under any circumstances. What is nonetheless striking in this incident is the unbridled anger and fiercely hostile reaction of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the Turkish public. Mr. Erdogan said Israel was guilty of "state terrorism" and a "bloody massacre." His foreign minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, said "This attack is like 9/11 for Turkey," comparing it to a premeditated act of aggression that took 2,900 lives.

Mr. Erdogan does not always display such reactions to allegations of human rights violations. Last year, he defended Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, indicted by the International Criminal Court for killing half a million Sudanese Christians and non-Arab Muslims. In March 2010, he denied that Turks ever killed Armenian civilians. He labeled a U.S. congressional resolution on the Armenian deaths "a comedy, a parody." He said that the Turkish military garrison stationed in Cyprus since 1974 is "not an occupier" but "[ensures] the peace." On tens of thousands of Kurds killed by Turkish security forces from 1984 to 1999, he says nothing.

Could it be that there is something more to Mr. Erdogan's rage against Israel than just a spontaneous reaction to the loss of life here? Turkish elections, 13 months away, hold the answer. Backing for Mr. Erdogan's party has fallen to 29%, the lowest level since it won power in 2002 and far below the 47% it scored in July 2007. So Mr. Erdogan decided to play the Israel Card. (...) >>>

Who would have thought! Iran Revolutionary Guard's naval forces are prepared to accompany a flotilla -

Romandie News: "Iran ready to escort fleets aid for Gaza" (autotranslated from French)

(...)  "The naval forces of the Revolutionary Guards are fully prepared to escort flotillas of freedom and peace carrying humanitarian aid coming from around the world for the oppressed people of Gaza," said Ali Shirazi, who is the guide Supreme among the Revolutionary Guards (Pasdaran), according to the Mehr news agency.
"If the respected guide of the revolution gives an order to that effect to the naval forces of the Revolutionary Guards, they will take practical measures to escort flotillas into Gaza, making use of their capabilities and their equipment." >>>

The (r)aid flotilla, a new implement in the assymetric toolkit -

While the morally bankrupt UN scrambled last week to condemn Israel, the chief is now going ahead with a probe. Israel has rejected the outcome up front.

Washington Times: "Audio- Flotilla to Israeli Navy: 'Go back to Auschwitz'"

The Israeli Defense Forces released a new clip on Friday with an audio exchange between the captain on board the ship Mavi Marmara and the Israeli Navy radio operator. (h/t JPost): "You are approaching an area which is under a naval blockade," said the radio operator, to which one passenger on the ship replied, "Shut up, go back to Auschwitz."

Another voice then addressed the Navy, saying the ship had permission from the Gaza Port Authority to enter the blockaded area. "We're helping Arabs go against the US," added another voice. "Don't forget 9/11, guys."

This is hardly how "peace activists" on a "humanitarian mission" speak, but the Obama administration continues to cower around an international crisis involving one of our allies. What else can you expect from a president who only knows how to cast a "present" vote? >>>

This flotilla tactic might well prove to be the Reichstagfire and the Krystallnacht rolled into one. The Reichtagfire was a manufactured event that provided Hitler with an excuse to crack down on commies, while the Krystallnacht was a pogrom orchestrated by Goebbels, in which the Jews not only stood accused of provoking it, they also had to pay for the damages! What else is new?

Al Manar TV: "Following Sayyed Nasrallah's Call, Lebanon Prepares Aid Boat"

Less than twenty-four hours after the call of Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah to increase the number of Freedom Flotillas, two groups in Lebanon launched a campaign on Saturday to raise funds to buy a ship that they hope can set sail from Lebanon for Gaza next week carrying educational supplies and journalists.

The non-governmental groups "Free Palestine Movement" and "Reporters Without Limits" said they hoped the boats would set off for the blockaded Gaza Strip at the end of next week. It will carry aid, namely educational supplies for Palestinian children as well 50 Arab and foreign journalists and 25 European activists, including some MPs, organizers told a Beirut news conference. Al Manar TV: "“Flotilla Assault Marks the Beginning of the End for Israel”"

Haddad-Adel said the attack "opened a new horizon to the world" and that the world can now see the true nature of the Israelis. He added, "The Israelis showed that they are enemies of humanity, not only Arabs or Muslims, but every human being." "Philosophically and logically speaking, when a problem is designed wrongly, it is impossible to find a correction. Every solution for a wrongly-designed problem is necessarily wrong. This is the case for the Israelis. (...) >>>
