Communist Crimes on Trial: state terror

The pillar of every totalitarian state: institutionalized terrorism and citizens snatching citizens. There is no safety, anywhere -

Suit101: "Stalin's Purges"

The history of the Soviet Union would not be complete without a discussion of Stalin's Purges. Stalin's Purges represented state-sponsored terror at its height. While Lenin set the precedent for terror, Stalin created a culture of terror that pervaded every aspect of a Soviet citizen's life.

Stalin's Purges were the systematic removal of individuals from society. Stalin's Purges embodied state-sponsored terror in the Soviet Union of the 1930s. The Great Purge, which lasted from 1934-1938 saw an escalation in purges and an increase in the violence that underscored the purges. (...) >>>

Control by humiliation -

Jamie Glazov's epic interview with Theodore Dalrymple -

FrontPage: "Our Culture, What’s Left Of It"

(...) FP: You mention that your dad was a communist. Tell us about his world view and how this affected your family and your own intellectual journey.

Dalrymple: My father was a communist though he was also a businessman. Our house was full of communist literature from the 1930s and 40s, and I remember such authors as Plekhanov and Maurice Hindus and Edgar Snow. It was always clear that my father's concern for humanity was not always matched by his concern for men, to put it mildly, for whom (as individuals) he often expressed contempt. He found it difficult to enter an equal relationship with anyone, and preferred to play Stalin to their Molotov. We had The Short Course in the house, incidentally, and one of my favourite books (which I used to leaf through as a child) was a vast picture book of the Soviet Union in 1947. (...) >>>

The Cold War's 9/11 -

CFP: "Castro and Che’s Foiled (and Forgotten) 9/11"

“I’m proud of the path of Osama bin Laden,” gushed Ilich Ramírez Sánchez from a French prison in 2002. Ramirez was also known during the 1970’s as “Carlos the Jackal,” and “The World’s Most Wanted Terrorist.” In 1967 Ramirez-Sanchez was an eager recruit into Cuba’s “guerrilla” (terror) training camps started by Che Guevara in 1959. “Bin Laden has followed a trail I myself blazed,” he continued during an interview with the London-based pan-Arab daily Al-Hayat. “I followed news of the September 11 attacks on the United States non-stop from the beginning. I can’t describe that wonderful feeling of relief!” “We will bring the war to the imperialist enemies’ very home,” raved Carlos the Jackal’s idol and spiritual mentor (Che Guevara) in his Message to the Tri-Continental Conference in 1966, “to his places of work and recreation.

The imperialist enemy must feel like a hunted animal wherever he moves. Thus we’ll destroy him! These hyenas are fit only for extermination. We must keep our hatred (against the U.S.) alive and fan it to paroxysm!”

Fortunately, on Nov. 17 1962, J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI foiled the “war” Castro and Che had planned for us “hyenas,” in some of our favorite “places of recreation.” On Saturday morning, November 17th, 1962, FBI headquarters in Washington D.C. took on “all the trappings of a military command post,” according to historian William Breuer. As well it might have. The night before an intelligence puzzle had finally come together. The resulting picture staggered the FBI men. (...) >>>

Russians finally admit Stalin ordered Katyn -

In an apparent case of 'truth by democracy' "the Russian Lower House of Parliament on Friday, for the first time, officially blamed Soviet dictator Josef Stalin for the 1940 massacre of more than 20,000 Polish officers and other citizens at Katyn."

Here a great interview with "Paul Kengor, professor of political science at Grove City College, on his book revealing how communists, from Moscow to New York to Chicago, have long manipulated America’s liberals/progressives. Dupes: How America’s Adversaries Have Manipulated Progressives for a Century is based on an unprecedented volume of declassified materials from Soviet archives, FBI files, and more."

Weasel Zippers: "Researcher Given Access to Chinese Communist Party Archives Says Mao Killed 45 Million People in Only Four Years…"

Obama regime official Anita Dunn hardest hit… (Independent)- Mao Zedong, founder of the People’s Republic of China, qualifies as the greatest mass murderer in world history, an expert who had unprecedented access to official Communist Party archives said yesterday.

Speaking at The Independent Woodstock Literary Festival, Frank Dikötter, a Hong Kong-based historian, said he found that during the time that Mao was enforcing the Great Leap Forward in 1958, in an effort to catch up with the economy of the Western world, he was responsible for overseeing “one of the worst catastrophes the world has ever known”.

Mr Dikötter, who has been studying Chinese rural history from 1958 to 1962, when the nation was facing a famine, compared the systematic torture, brutality, starvation and killing of Chinese peasants to the Second World War in its magnitude. At least 45 million people were worked, starved or beaten to death in China over these four years; the worldwide death toll of the Second World War was 55 million. (...) Flashback: Dunn says Mao is her favorite “philosopher”… (...) >>>

The Blaze: "GOLDBERG RESPONDS TO CASTRO"

~

Seems Castro, after having caused untold human misery, is conceding the commie system doesn't work. Or is he? The more discerning reader might suspect a plan to make Cuba part of the 'family of nations'. With the Obama in the White House, it's now or never. Part 1, Part 2

Lucianne: "Report: Castro says Cuban model doesn't work", Associated Press, by Paul Haven

Fidel Castro told a visiting American journalist that Cuba's communist economic model doesn't work, a rare comment on domestic affairs from a man who has conspicuously steered clear of local issues since stepping down four years ago. The fact that things are not working efficiently on this cash-strapped Caribbean island is hardly news. Fidel's brother Raul, the country's president, has said the same thing repeatedly. (Snip) Cuba's economic system was still worth exporting to other countries, and Castro replied: "The Cuban model doesn't even work for us anymore" Goldberg wrote Wednesday in a post on his Atlantic blog. 'Lustrated' for genocide -

Nazis got death sentences and are rightly hounded to the last man. Commie perpetrators are merely 'lustrated', while mass murderers get away with 19 years for the killing of no less than 16,000 human beings - shame on the UN, which has become a immoral den of tyrants, racists and other totalitarians -

Fox News: "khmer Rouge's chief jailer found guilty of war crimes, will spend 19 years behind bars"

A U.N.-backed tribunal sentenced the Khmer Rouge's chief jailer to 35 years for overseeing the deaths of up to 16,000 people — the first verdict involving a senior member of the "killing fields" regime that devastated a generation of Cambodians.

Victims and their relatives burst into tears after learning that Kaing Guek Eav — also known as Duch — will actually serve only 19 years after being convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity after taking into account time already served and other factors.

That means the 67-year-old could one day walk free, a prospect that infuriated many who have been demanding justice for victims of the regime that killed an estimated 1.7 million people between 1975-79.

"I can't accept this," said Saodi Ouch, 46, shaking so hard she could hardly talk. "My family died ... my older sister, my older brother. I'm the only one left." (...) >>>

SignOn SanDiego: Church beatifies Pole slain by communists in 1984", by Monika Scislowska

Thousands of Poles filled a vast sunbathed square in Warsaw on Sunday for the beatification of Jerzy Popieluszko, a charismatic priest tortured and killed in 1984 by communist Poland's secret police for supporting Lech Walesa's Solidarity freedom movement. The head of the Vatican's saint-making office, Archbishop Angelo Amato, presided over the Mass at Pilsudski Square that was also celebrated by 120 bishops and 1,600 priests. Popieluszko's 90-year-old mother Marianna, his sister and brothers, were among some 140,000 attending that included Walesa. Amato read out Pope Benedict XVI's declaration that made Popieluszko blessed for his martyrdom in giving his life to defend good. The Foundry: "Castro’s European Apologists"

Do left-wing European journalists and politicians share the blame for the 50-year duration of the Castro dictatorship? Cuban human rights campaigner Armando Valladares seems to think so, and he makes a good case. Sure, the Castros and their goons—who beat up with truncheons and drag through the streets anyone who dares speak their minds in the “Socialist Paradise”—have ultimate responsibility for what they have wrought. But Valladares, who spent 20 years in Castro’s Gulag, has a point when he says that the support that Europe’s self-selected bien pensants have given to Cuba’s oppressors has been instrumental in the continuation of Cuba’s tragedy. Most galling to Valladares is that this support is given because of the hatred the Europeans feel for the United States, which seems to override the suffering of 10 million people. Mr. Valladares came to the Heritage Foundation to speak on May 20 and this is what he said on the subject as he described a recent trip to Sweden and Norway (...) >>>

The archives - A twin entry on the The Dartboard (Hat Tip) -

City Journal: "A Hidden History of Evil - Why doesn’t anyone care about the unread Soviet archives?", by Claire Berlinski

In the world’s collective consciousness, the word “Nazi” is synonymous with evil. It is widely understood that the Nazis’ ideology—nationalism, anti-Semitism, the autarkic ethnic state, the Führer principle—led directly to the furnaces of Auschwitz. It is not nearly as well understood that Communism led just as inexorably, everywhere on the globe where it was applied, to starvation, torture, and slave-labor camps. Nor is it widely acknowledged that Communism was responsible for the deaths of some 150 million human beings during the twentieth century. The world remains inexplicably indifferent and uncurious about the deadliest ideology in history.

For evidence of this indifference, consider the unread Soviet archives. Pavel Stroilov, a Russian exile in London, has on his computer 50,000 unpublished, untranslated, top-secret Kremlin documents, mostly dating from the close of the Cold War. He stole them in 2003 and fled Russia. Within living memory, they would have been worth millions to the CIA; they surely tell a story about Communism and its collapse that the world needs to know. Yet he can’t get anyone to house them in a reputable library, publish them, or fund their translation. (...) >>>

Digital Survisors: "Communist Body Count", by Scott Manning

The following estimates represent citizens killed or starved to death by their own Communist governments since 1918. These numbers do not include war dead. The governments are sorted by body count (highest to lowest). All numbers are mid-estimates.

While this list is as complete as I have been able to determine, it is evolving. Some numbers are incomplete and there are still five Communist countries that have the potential to kill more of their citizens. Over the next year, each government will be profiled in detail on this website. A detailed bibliography is listed at the end of this page. Feedback is more than welcome.

The Left's double standards -

Prague Daily Monitor: "ODS wants to ban Czech Communists"

The Civic Democratic Party (ODS) Thursday called on the government to submit a senators' proposal to disband the Czech Communists (KSCM) to the Supreme Administrative Court (NSS), senator Alexandr Vondra (ODS) said. It should be evaluated whether the activities of the KSCM are in harmony with the constitution using the similar approach with which the NSS decided to disband the extreme right Workers' Party (DS) last week, Vondra said. Vondra launched the appeal to Prime Minister Jan Fischer's interim government on the anniversary of the 1948 Communist take-over. "It is quite right to evaluate the activities of extreme left in this country," Vondra said. The left's double standard -

Townhall: "Leftwingers Outraged by Being Associated with Leftwingers", by Humberto Fontova

Nazis (and by implication all “right- wingers,” past and present) were inherently wicked. Their agenda was evil from A to Z, their methods along with their goals.

Communists (and by implication left-wingers) at least mean well. Oh, they might get a tad overzealous at times (killing more people than the Nazis and the Bubonic Plague combined, as documented in the Black Book of Communism, for instance) but at least their hearts were in the right place. Even Barry Goldwater might get it. “Extremism in the defense of socialism is no vice!”

In a one hour special titled “Revolutionary Holocaust; Live Free or Die” run on January 22nd Glenn Beck mounted a full-frontal attack against the above notion—and left it a smoking cinder. First off, by sourcing Jonah Goldberg’s Liberal Fascism, Beck swept aside a premise that often handicaps conservatives from the get-go: the premise that Nazis belong on the right. Bombarded by relentless documentation to the contrary, this liberal bromide quickly blew up, and the program proceeded to report on the notoriously under-reported Communist holocaust. (...) >>>
